The move also gave Judge freedom to build Silicon Valley out as multiple shows in one. He was going out on his own, he was starting his own company, and he was totally in over his head. What I thought would be an easy workplace comedy - The Office with Palo Alto nerds - transformed the minute the creators split up Hendricks and his best friend and tossed him into the deep end. It was at that point that I started to take Silicon Valley seriously. So he and his writers pushed them apart, freeing up Hendricks to take the leading role and allowing Bighetti to remain as the viewers’ eyes and ears inside the evil tech company, Hooli. Judge was smart enough to realize early on in the show that leading man Richard Hendricks (played neurotically and wonderfully by Thomas Middleditch) and his best friend, Nelson “Big Head” Bighetti (Josh Brener) were a little similar and acted like a security blanket for each other. The show, like a good start-up, has at once added people but grown leaner and more nimble in its two seasons. Having an experienced showrunner can be a blessing and a curse for TV shows, but in Judge’s case, its been necessary. Judge has made great and successful television before, with his long-running animated King of the Hill still reaping in syndication money. The way Silicon Valley grew so perfectly has a lot to do with the intelligence of its creator, Mike Judge. It’s now the funniest show on television. Silicon Valley has grown far beyond those initial barbs. I thought it was going to be a wonderful, massive in-joke. These guys got it.īut I wasn’t sure that the show had enough legs to grow beyond something that people who’d lived in the Bay Area and/or worked in tech could appreciate. But what worried me when the show began was that it would never be much more than that.Īs a former resident of San Francisco, the show delighted me personally - seeing Shakira perform to a room full of awkward and shy coders, who had just taken a break from praising each other for their genius ideas to not-dance to her performance, brought a massive smile to my face. HBO’s Silicon Valley started out as a show that made fun of Silicon Valley.
